Turn your dysfunctional team into a functional and thriving team
In his best-selling book, The FIVE Dysfunctions of a TEAM, Patrick Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions that go to the very heart of why teams often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and become an effective and functional team. Following are the FIVE Factors that you will recognize in a thriving team.
There is Trust among team members:
Trust is built when employees can admit to one another when they are wrong or have made a mistake.
They have no fear of conflict:
Healthy conflict is present when there is an environment where all ideas and opinions
are welcome.
There is a commitment to team and organizational goals:
Commitment occurs when employees feel they have been heard by the team and
the leader.
They hold one another accountable:
Holding everyone accountable follows naturally when there is trust and commitment.
They focus on results:
Focus on results is evident when the entire team has agreed on the goals
and objectives of the team.
To develop and sustain a functional team, leaders must have an awareness of the behavioral diversity present within their team. Individuals each have different strengths and potential limitations. The goal for the leader is to value and appreciate those differences; to capitalize on their talents and unique behavioral preferences and priorities. By recognizing that everyone has something to contribute, team members can learn to develop openness, and come to trust that their talents and opinions are welcomed, honored, and respected
Unhealthy or dysfunctional team behaviors should be avoided at all costs
Negative behaviors form after the official meeting has concluded, and a decision has been made – such as “the ain’t it awful communities.” These types of conversations can be critical, and develop unrest, anxiety, and distrust among team members. Dissent among team members results in team dysfunction.
When team cohesiveness begins to deteriorate, team politics emerge. The team begins to drown in dysfunction, and the team loses its sense of purpose. Members develop enemies and create alliances; politics escalate, and progress is lost; leading to turnover of the brightest and best. All the while, the organization begins its downward spiral into decline and finally into eventual financial loss.
Assess the leaders and members who are a part of your organization. Are they functioning as a cohesive unit? If not, there is something that you can do to reduce fear and rebuild trust, gain commitment, establish accountability, and have a unified focus on results.
