The human person is naturally endowed with empathy. We feel for all of humanity. We laugh with those who laugh, love with those who love, cry with those who cry, and suffers with those who suffer. Every person has this capability. It’s called our “vicarious imagination.”
This part of the mind enables you to project mentally into others’ situations and to understand their reactions and emotions.
Empathy helps people to feel understood, valued and cared about. Great leaders, individuals skillful in handling people those relating easily to others and good employers are individuals who have learned to use their vicarious imaginations.
It was Henry Ford who said: “If there is any one secret to success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from his/her angle as well as your own.”
Empathy is really the emotional characteristic of the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. But before you know how to do unto others, you have to know how you would like them to do unto you.
